Almost any handyman can lay deck boards, but few understand the engineering that makes a deck last. The substructure — what's under the boards — does 90% of the work. Wrong joist spacing causes bouncy, sagging boards. Insufficient ventilation under the deck causes accelerated rot. Cheap fixings rust within months and stain the surface. As specialist deck builders, we get all of this right by default. Joists are spaced according to board manufacturer specs (typically 400–500mm centres for hardwood, closer for composite). Substructures are raised on adjustable pedestals or concrete pads with full underside ventilation. Every fixing is stainless steel or coated to A4 marine grade. Boards are laid with proper expansion gaps and pre-drilled to prevent splitting.

We also handle the things most non-specialists ignore: flashing where the deck meets the house, kick boards to keep leaves and debris out of the substructure, drainage matrices on elevated decks, and proper ledger-board attachment with through-bolts and waterproof membrane.

Hardwood decking — typically iroko, balau or cumaru — is the premium choice for Perthshire gardens. Pressure-treated softwood remains the budget option at £120–£170 per m² installed. With a properly engineered substructure and annual treatment, a softwood deck will last 12–18 years in Perth's climate. We do install softwood decks where budget is tight, but always over a hardwood-equivalent substructure so the bones last.
