Kitchen Showroom Upsells: Which Upgrades Are Actually Worth Your Money?

The Showroom Experience: Designed to Make You Spend

Walking into a kitchen showroom is exciting. The displays are immaculate, the lighting is perfect, and everything looks like it belongs in a magazine. But remember: showrooms are sales environments. Every feature, finish, and accessory is positioned to encourage you to upgrade.

That doesn't mean all upgrades are bad — some are genuinely worth every penny. But others are overpriced, impractical, or unnecessary for the average family home. At Marshall & Co, we've fitted hundreds of kitchens across Perth and Perthshire, and we've seen which upgrades our clients love years later — and which they regret.

Here's our honest guide to help you spend wisely.

Upgrades That Are Absolutely Worth It

    Soft-Close Hinges and Drawer Mechanisms

    Cost: £2–£5 per unit extra

This is the easiest "yes" on the list. Soft-close mechanisms prevent doors and drawers from slamming, which reduces noise, protects the cabinet structure, and just makes the kitchen feel more premium. Over 15–20 years of daily use, the gentle closing action prevents wear and loosening that you see in kitchens with standard hinges.

Every kitchen we install at Marshall & Co comes with soft-close as standard — it's that important.

    Quartz or Solid Surface Worktops

Cost: £2,000–£5,000 more than laminate (depending on size)

If there's one single upgrade that transforms a kitchen, it's the worktop. Quartz is virtually indestructible — it resists scratches, heat, staining, and bacteria. It never needs sealing (unlike granite or marble) and looks stunning for decades.

Yes, it's significantly more expensive than laminate. But you touch and use your worktops every single day. The tactile quality, the seamless appearance, and the durability make this the upgrade with the highest satisfaction rate among our clients.

If quartz is beyond budget, consider a solid surface like Corian. It allows seamless joints and integrated sinks, creating a sleek, hygienic finish.

Pull-Out Internal Waste and Recycling Bins

    Cost: £80–£200

Built-in bins are one of those upgrades that seem minor until you live with them. A pull-out bin system integrated into a base unit keeps waste hidden, contained, and hygienic. Most systems include separate compartments for general waste, recycling, and food waste — perfect for Scotland's kerbside collection requirements.

Compare that to a freestanding bin taking up floor space, collecting grime underneath, and being visible to guests. It's a no-brainer.

    Boiling Water Tap

    Cost: £800–£1,500 installed

A boiling water tap (Quooker, Grohe Red, or similar) replaces your kettle, provides filtered water, and delivers instant boiling water at the touch of a button. It frees up worktop space, saves energy compared to repeatedly boiling a kettle, and is genuinely one of the features our clients rave about most.

The initial cost is significant, but the convenience factor is enormous — especially in a busy household.

Deep Pan Drawers Instead of Base Cupboards

    Cost: £30–£60 per drawer extra

Standard base cupboards require you to bend down, reach in, and rummage around in dark corners. Deep pan drawers pull out fully, giving you instant visibility and access to everything stored inside. They're perfect for heavy pots, pans, baking trays, and food storage containers.

Once you've lived with pan drawers, you'll never go back to cupboards.

    Upgrades Worth Considering (Budget Dependent)

    Under-Cabinet LED Lighting

    Cost: £200–£500 installed

Not always offered as a showroom upsell because it's often handled by the installer. But if it is offered, say yes. Under-cabinet LEDs illuminate your worktops where you actually work, eliminating shadows cast by overhead lights. They also add ambient warmth in the evenings. We include lighting recommendations in every kitchen project we deliver.

    Larder Pull-Out Units

    Cost: £300–£600 per unit

Full-height pull-out larders are the most space-efficient storage solution available. They use narrow spaces (300mm wide) that would otherwise be wasted and give you full visibility of everything stored. Brilliant for tinned goods, spices, oils, and dry food.

    Drawer Organisers and Cutlery Inserts

    Cost: £30–£100 per drawer

Timber or bamboo drawer organisers keep cutlery, utensils, and tools neatly arranged. They prevent the dreaded "junk drawer" syndrome and make finding things effortless. A small cost for a big quality-of-life improvement.

    Upgrades You Can Probably Skip

    Handle-less (Push-to-Open) Doors

    Cost: £500–£2,000 premium

Handle-less kitchens look incredibly sleek in showrooms. But in real life, they show fingerprints constantly (especially in gloss finishes), the push-to-open mechanisms can fail over time, and they're significantly more expensive.

A better approach: choose slim, modern handles in brushed brass, matt black, or knurled chrome. You get a contemporary look for a fraction of the price, with the added bonus of not needing to clean finger marks off every door.

    Built-In Coffee Machines

    Cost: £1,500–£3,000

They look impressive in the showroom display, but built-in coffee machines are expensive to buy, expensive to maintain, and most people find a standalone machine (Sage, De'Longhi, Nespresso) more versatile and easier to clean. You also lose a valuable storage cupboard to house the machine.

Save the cabinet space. Buy a quality standalone machine. Use the £2,000 saving on something you'll appreciate more — like better worktops.

    Top-End Appliance Brands

    Cost: £2,000–£5,000 premium

Showrooms love to display Miele, Sub-Zero, and Gaggenau appliances. They're beautiful, they're well-engineered, and they're phenomenally expensive. But the honest truth is that mid-range brands — Bosch, Neff, AEG, Samsung — offer excellent reliability, great features, and modern aesthetics at a fraction of the cost.

Unless you're a serious home cook or entertaining regularly, mid-range appliances will serve you perfectly well for 10–15 years.

    Coloured or Patterned Splashbacks

    Cost: £300–£800 premium

Trendy splashback designs can date quickly. A bold colour or pattern that looks fresh today may feel tired in five years. Neutral tiles, simple subway tiles, or a matching worktop upstand are timeless and far cheaper. If you want personality, add it through accessories, lighting, and décor that can be easily changed.

Our Top Advice for Kitchen Showroom Visits

    1. Set your budget before you go — and tell the salesperson. A good showroom will work within it rather than constantly upselling you.

    2. Focus on what you touch daily — worktops, drawers, taps, and handles make the biggest difference to how your kitchen feels.

    3. Ask about total installed cost — showroom prices often exclude installation, plumbing, electrics, and tiling. Make sure you're comparing like for like.

    4. Take your time — don't be pressured by "limited-time offers" or "today-only discounts." A reputable company will honour fair pricing whenever you're ready.

    5. Get independent installation — many showrooms use subcontractors who may not deliver the same quality as a dedicated renovation company like Marshall & Co. We're happy to fit kitchens from any supplier.
